Exploring the Railway Heritage of Newton- Le-Willows and Earlestown

  • Earlestown Railway Station Railway Street Newton-le-Willows, England, WA12 United Kingdom (map)

Merseyside Civic Society and Councillor Seve Gomez-Aspron (St Helens Council Deputy leader) will lead a guided walk from Earlestown station (oldest in use station in the world) to Newton-le-Willows, walking through Earlsetown town centre to meet the Sankey Canal, under the Sankey Viaduct (world’s first railway crosses the first industrial canal).

The route will continue along the Sankey Canal through Wargrave to the Vulcan works site which was opened by George Stephenson and partners in 1832.

The tour then passes the Red Bank Civil war battle site before finishing with with a refreshment at one of the lovely pubs on Newton High Street or you can go directly to Newton Railway Station for trains back to Earlestown and Liverpool.

The Liverpool-Manchester Railway has always played a vital role for local neighbourhoods, providing connectivity for people for work, housing and leisure. As plans for the 2030 bicentenary of the Railway – the oldest passenger railway in the world - start to take shape, this walk will remind us of the importance of transport in creating and sustaining local communities

Please be aware that this is a relatively long walk of about 5 kilometers requiring sturdy footwear.
