Merseyside Civic Society are hosting a talk and guided walking tour of Birkenhead Park led by Professor Ian Wray (University of Liverpool) and World Heritage Project Officer, Marie Le Devehat (Wirral Council).

Birkenhead Park was the forerunner of the Park's Movement. When it officially opened in 1847, it was both a social revolution and a town planning innovation – a response to the industrial revolution's poor health conditions, and a ‘green oasis’ amongst the hustle and bustle of urban life. It is such a special place that Wirral Council, with the support of the Friends of Birkenhead Park, is currently seeking its inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The presentation will first elaborate on the park’s relationship with other industrial revolution sites, before providing insights about the World Heritage journey.

We then visit the ‘jewel in the crown’ , the magnificent Palm House, where the café will be open for refreshments, before joining one of our White Badge Guides on a tour of the building and grounds.

Croxteth Hall: Historic Country Estate and Walled Garden Guided Walk

Croxteth Hall: Historic Country Estate and Walled Garden Guided Walk

  • Croxteth Hall and Country Park (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Discover the historic estate that surrounds Croxteth Hall, a listed heritage landscape with many old estate buildings and features.  Take a ramble around the Park, including the beautiful Victorian Walled Garden.

The Victorian Walled Garden is a beautiful and peaceful place, hidden by its high walls. This ‘secret garden’ was created close to the Hall on the fertile flood plain of the River Alt; a place for growing the finest vegetables, fruit, and produce for the Earl’s kitchens and dining table, but also a place with flowerbeds to enjoy and paths to stroll along.

Created in early Victorian times, it replaced an older ‘Physic Garden’ but has changed little since then.  It has some notable historic features, including heated ‘Flue Walls’, a Mushroom Growing House, and fruit trees carefully trained to grow into a variety of decorative (and productive) shapes.

Long borders of perennial flowering plants bring colour and scent to the garden, particularly in the summer months.

The Walled Garden is also home to four National Plant Collections, part of the Plant Heritage scheme, with our gardeners growing and conserving this important genetic heritage.

Please book tickets ahead for a guided Walk tour. You can find tickets here.

Southport: Re- imagining the Classical Victorian Resort

Tour and Presentation at the Engine Room and a Guided Walking Tour of Lord Street

Southport was once one of the most important Victorian seaside resorts, second only to Brighton.

Its historic Lord Street was an inspiration across Europe as a centre for fashion, shopping, wellness and entertainment.

With the changing fortunes of the British coasts in the wake of package holidays abroad, and retail moving online, particularly following the pandemic, Southport is working hard to diversify its economy into creative and digital hybrid working and related fields.

Slowly but surely the local authority, the business improvement district, educational providers and the community are reimagining new ways of using the historic built environment for innovative, inclusive and sustainable activities – reinventing the seaside of the future by building on the rich heritage and legacy of the past.

The tour will start with a look at the newly-opened Engine Room (a co-working and co-learning creative space, and an introduction by its Director, Dr Eric Lybeck, followed by a walking tour of Victorian Lord Street and the Townscape Heritage improvements led by a member of Sefton Council’s Historic Environment Team.

Hilbre Island

Hilbre Island Community Land Trust was established by three organisations, the British Art & Design Association (BADA), Hilbre Island Bird Observatory (HiBO) and the Friends of Hilbre (FOH) with the shared aim of securing a long term future for the important heritage buildings and protected landscape within the central portion of the island. The buildings, four of which are listed grade two, will be restored to create; a centre for the study of Art, Science and Sustainability, to expand the existing monitoring of migratory birds and to enable greater connection with the local community through educational activities.

Working with the local authority a strategy has been designed which will ensure the sensitive restoration of the buildings and protection for the ecologically important landscape around them whilst providing facilities to enhance the work of artists, scientists and researchers on Hilbre.

The particular condition of Hilbre as a tidal island, a nature reserve, a SSSI and a Ramsar site with no mains services requires a highly sustainable approach to energy, waste and water provision, one that works with the island and its natural resources of wind, sun and water, but also minimises consumption. Within the project boundary three buildings (Bouymasters House, Store and Workshop) will be adapted by BADA to create individual artists’ studios, a shared research studio and a communal social space available for all users of the centre.

Telegraph House will be used by HiBO to provide additional accommodation and facilities for tagging migratory birds, they are part of an international network of Bird Observatories and have been active on Hilbre since 1957. The Day/School Room and the iconic Telegraph Station with its distinctive curved window will be run by FOH as an exhibition and information point for the island and a base for school groups and open days. The enclosed fields surrounding these buildings contain rare flora and fauna and the CLT will work with Natural England to ensure the protection of this environment. Several organisations and individuals already use Hilbre Island for research and creative study, and BADA ART has been working with Liverpool John Moores University to identify these and establish their requirements which will form the basis of the design brief.

This project is intended to provide a long-term secure future for this sensitive heritage and ecological asset and will be funded by a combination of donations and grants, this process will allow time for the detail to evolve in consultation with others who care for the future of this magical place.

Dominic Wilkinson will be leading a guided walking tour around the empty buildings that form part of the Hilbre Centre for Art, Science & Sustainability project on Hilbre Island in West Kirkby.

The walk will start and end at West Kirby Marine Lake car park.

Please be aware that this is a relatively long walk with limited facilities. Please check the weather and wear suitable clothing and sensible footwear as the ground can be wet and slippy.

Croxteth Hall: Historic Country Estate and Walled Garden Guided Walk

Croxteth Hall: Historic Country Estate and Walled Garden Guided Walk

Liverpool's Streets in the Sky

Liverpool's Streets in the Sky

Liverpool once had a network of “streets in the sky” - and you can still see it its fading ghosts if you know where to look. From the 1960s, walkways appeared around buildings and over roads, so pedestrians could stride across the city without touching the ground. Those bridges and passages have long vanished, but the city wouldn't look like it does without them.

Journalist Alistair Houghton will take you on an alternative tour of the vanished city in the sky and tell you all about how the spirit of 60s high-rise optimism curdled.

Alistair Houghton is a Liverpool-based journalist who is editor of national news website BusinessLive and a former business editor at the Liverpool Echo

The walk will centre around the commercial district.

Please meet 15 minutes before the tour is due to start.
