Drawing Workshop: Southport

LAF has teamed up with Liverpool Independent Art School (LIAS) to produce a series of exciting Urban Sketching Workshops open to all artists from beginners to seasoned pros.

The theme of this year’s festival is Neighbourhoods and our workshops will explore how the idea of ‘Neighbourhood’ can be explored by sketching on location.

We will look at what gives a neighbourhood its unique identity by looking at recognisable landmarks or the layers of old and new. We’ll seek out the places where people gather for conversation which could be anywhere from a bus stop to a café.

You will only need drawing paper, drawing media, (e.g pen, pencil). Instruction will be given and the workshop will go on regardless of the weather.

The workshop will be led by Andrea Stables

Andrea is a Illustrator, artist and urban sketcher, influenced by realism.

She has a first class BA Hons degree in Graphic Design and Illustration from the Liverpool School of Art and Design at LJMU.

Andrea's practice includes drawing, painting, print making, 3D modelling, paper engineering and sketch book making. Her favourite medium changes by the day, but she regularly works in ink, acrylic, oil, gouache, watercolour and she also create digital artworks.

Creating, and being among creatives, is incredibly important to Andrea and she truly believes art is essential for wellbeing and should be accessible to all.

The workshop will be led by Paul Gatenby

Paul started studying art seriously as a mature student after fifteen years working in industry. During his student years he worked in community arts and adult education, then after his degree, I started teaching in Further Education. He left Further Education in 2014 and became a freelance artist. It was around this time that he set up Liverpool Urban Sketchers and, along with Toc, Liverpool Independent Art School.

Paul has always thought of art as a social pursuit - none of that ‘starving in a garret’ business for him! It’s about making connections; with the audience, with other artists and with the subject matter.

Urban Sketching led Paul on to painting cityscapes and he tends to be drawn to forgotten corners. Looking for the beauty or tragedy in a tumbledown old warehouse or abandoned pub. When Paul paints people he like the painting to look like them. There is no message, he just likes you to see what he saw.

Merseyside Civic Society are hosting a talk and guided walking tour of Birkenhead Park led by Professor Ian Wray (University of Liverpool) and World Heritage Project Officer, Marie Le Devehat (Wirral Council).

Birkenhead Park was the forerunner of the Park's Movement. When it officially opened in 1847, it was both a social revolution and a town planning innovation – a response to the industrial revolution's poor health conditions, and a ‘green oasis’ amongst the hustle and bustle of urban life. It is such a special place that Wirral Council, with the support of the Friends of Birkenhead Park, is currently seeking its inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The presentation will first elaborate on the park’s relationship with other industrial revolution sites, before providing insights about the World Heritage journey.

Croxteth Hall: Historic Country Estate and Walled Garden Guided Walk

  • Croxteth Hall and Country Park (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Discover the historic estate that surrounds Croxteth Hall, a listed heritage landscape with many old estate buildings and features.  Take a ramble around the Park, including the beautiful Victorian Walled Garden.

The Victorian Walled Garden is a beautiful and peaceful place, hidden by its high walls. This ‘secret garden’ was created close to the Hall on the fertile flood plain of the River Alt; a place for growing the finest vegetables, fruit, and produce for the Earl’s kitchens and dining table, but also a place with flowerbeds to enjoy and paths to stroll along.

Created in early Victorian times, it replaced an older ‘Physic Garden’ but has changed little since then.  It has some notable historic features, including heated ‘Flue Walls’, a Mushroom Growing House, and fruit trees carefully trained to grow into a variety of decorative (and productive) shapes.

Long borders of perennial flowering plants bring colour and scent to the garden, particularly in the summer months.

The Walled Garden is also home to four National Plant Collections, part of the Plant Heritage scheme, with our gardeners growing and conserving this important genetic heritage.

Please book tickets ahead for a guided Walk tour. You can find tickets here.

Drafts + Draughts

Drafts + Draughts

Following the success of the Drafts + Draughts event at #LAF21 and #LAF22, we will re-create an evening built on food, drinks and ideas as part of the #LAF24 Festival.

Attendees will be placed into teams of 6-8 at random. They will be assigned the same key development site, selected with the assistance of the judges, on which they will design architectural interventions. It is proposed that the judging panel is made up of a mix of built environment professionals and stakeholders local to the proposed site.

The result will produce a cross pollination of ideas in, and between the teams resulting in stronger inter-practice relationships.

We have an exciting panel of architectural, built environment, and local stakeholder experts that will judge the presentations

Site and judges to be announced soon.

Designing with Plants the Great Dixter Way

Designing with Plants the Great Dixter Way

Designing with Plants the Great Dixter Way

Come to hear how Great Dixter is host to such an abundance of plants and wildlife, under Fergus Garrett's creative leadership.

Tickets

Whilst researching his book on 'Meadows', Christopher Lloyd, the esteemed garden writer, visited Liverpool and wrote about the work of Landlife in Knowsley and Liverpool. Years later in 2018, Fergus Garrett hosted a National Wildflower Conversation and then a curious group of gardeners and artists from Liverpool in 2022. We have very much valued these exchanges as we start to build the Scouse Flowerhouse Co-operative.

In this lecture Fergus will talk about how Great Dixter continues to nourish and showcase its incredibly rich and beautiful range of plants and wildlife, through experimentation and careful re-use of materials, through embracing heritage crafts and constantly evolving a horticultural practice which embraces ecological principles.

Designing with Plants the Great Dixter Way is to nurture people and to embrace tropical species and colour alongside native species thriving in cracks in the stonework. Each and all have their place.

This lecture is equally relevant to those with curiosity as to experienced gardeners, to those involved in maintenance and design of garden spaces and public realm. It will be followed by a lunch and a visit to Everton Park Pond Garden at 2pm.

The lecture will be recorded and available on the Scouse Flowerhouse website afterwards.

Wouldn't it just be incredible if our urban realm could aspire to a similar level of beauty, abundance and colour?

Drawing Workshop: Runcorn

***EVENT CANCELLED**

Better Than Zero Carbon: Hempcrete Talk

Better Than Zero Carbon: Hempcrete Talk

  • Sudley Changing Rooms (meet outside Sudley House) (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Join Growing Sudley and their capital team for a series of talks about the traditional, natural building material that needs to re-take the world by storm, Hempcrete. In researching ways to make the building refurbishment as low carbon and chemical free as possible, they have used this natural material to clad the building and are on a mission to spread the word and encourage others to use it wherever they can.

Through these talks with our architects Harrison Stringfellow, you’ll find out more about the incredible story of Hempcrete, its use, and how it may avoid many of the environmental, logistic and economic downsides of concrete and other building materials. The cement industry is responsible for about 8% of planet-warming carbon dioxide emissions, alongside problems created by unyielding surfaces and low insulation, or R-value, properties. In addition, modern construction industries use a toxic cocktail of chemicals which are bad for the people building, living or working in them, as well as for the earth.

Hempcrete is not only almost carbon-negative, but there are no petrochemicals involved at all. By growing and building with Hempcrete they are effectively removing CO2 from the atmosphere whilst providing natural, sustainable construction with a long history of effective use. See their building, hear about their journey and find out how, with the help of National Lottery Heritage Fund, they have trained local people in the use of Hempcrete and brought this construction skill into the Liverpool City Region.

Tickets are limited so please book ahead. You can find tickets here

Lighthouse Church

Join shedkm for a tour of Lighthouse Church in Heswall. The Liverpool based architects worked closely with The Parish of Heswall to embrace the Church’s established ethos of welcome, combined with improving street presence to create a sense of place with a strong new identity. The extensive glazing invites people to step inside and creates a new relationship with the existing streetscape and wider Heswall community, embracing the concept of hospitality already embraced by the church congregation. The church accommodates a wide range of outreach and community events including concerts, exhibitions, playgroups, youth activities, classes, counselling, and community support services.

Please meet 15 minutes before the tour is due to start
